Jude Cowan Montague

Jude C Montague (1982) is a poet, historian and songwriter who currently works as a media archivist for ITN Source.

She graduated with a First and went on to study for a Masters in Film and Visual Media at Birkbeck College. This was followed by a PhD in Film History.

Her first collection of poetry, For the Messengers, contains poems written in response to news footage received from around the world during 2008. Extracts of it are available here, and you can watch a video about the book here.

"Jude Cowan has gone where I've never seen a jobbing journalist tread before. This is news observed with so discerning an eye that marvellous detail emerges within the poetry. Read her book. We are the richer for it." Jon Snow, Channel 4 News.

Jude's second collection, The Groodoyals of Terre Rouge, is based on the poet’s visit to a friend’s family in Port Louis, Mauritius. The pamphlet, which is filled with photographs, paintings and collages inspired by the same trip, was published in 2013. Jude returned to the Hall soon after its publication to give a poetry reading, alongside Hall poets Charlotte Geater and Amy Blakemore.

Jude improvises using electronica and voice on Reuters stories for her monthly show 'World News Vision' on SoundartRadio. Recent albums are available on the Three Legs Duck and Linear Obsessional netlabels. She was a student of the innovative jazz educator John Stevens at Community Music, and makes odd, expressive videos that can be found on her You Tube channel, 'solarisqs'. She is also one half of the duo "Foulkestone" which performs traditional folk songs with electronic instrumentation.

Jude has recently released an EP,"Winter Hill Sings", a collection of short multi-tracked vocal works informed by folk singing and hill walking. (The accompanying PDF booklet includes new texts, poetry and artwork by Jude.)

She has an active presence on the Hall Writers' Forum, and she has contributed to two of our Forum publications, Ballads and Divers Verses, and New Proverbs of Hell (the latter as both writer and illustrator.) You can listen to her performance at the 2014 Hall Writers' Day here.

Jude is currently working on her third collection of poetry, as well as compiling an anthology of NEWS POETRY, by journalists and news makers from national and international news organisations in the UK and abroad.
