Brexit, Community and St Edmund Hall: A Comment from the Principal and Student Presidents

The result of the UK referendum of June 2016 was a vote in favour of the UK leaving membership of the European Union (EU). Currently, UK membership assists students from across the EU to come to St Edmund Hall and our UK students to study in Continental Europe.

During this time of UK government and EU negotiations, and given various recent news items, it’s natural for there to be something of a climate of uncertainty. In St Edmund Hall there is no uncertainty over our commitment to encourage applications and to welcome students from anywhere across the EU, the UK and the world. The Hall will continue to extend support and opportunities to all its students whilst they are in Oxford – from financial bursaries, scholarships, study and travel grants, through to help from student peer-groups and other welfare provision. Likewise, there is no change in the well-recognised warmth of welcome and support that we give to students from across the regions of the UK regardless of diversity, social backgrounds or schooling.

St Edmund Hall is home to a student community of undergraduates in its Junior Common Room and of graduate students in the Middle Common Room. These students come from over 72 different countries and from all parts of the UK. We will all continue to stand steadfastly behind openness of entry and a welcome to students, staff and Fellows from whatever nation. We will continue to provide world-class opportunities for all, and to encourage and welcome people from everywhere in the UK, the EU and across the world.
