Graduation 2017

Tuesday, 1 August 2017

Last week, St Edmund Hall celebrated the graduation of its recently-finished undergraduates and postgraduates. Students, and their family and friends, were welcomed to College for a two course formal lunch with wine. This was one of the largest graduation events hosted by the College in recent years, with roughly 400 students and guests returning to the Hall for the celebrations.

After lunch, the students left College and walked down Queen’s Lane in a procession led by the Dean of Degrees to the Sheldonian Theatre, the place where the students matriculated at the beginning of their journeys at Oxford.

The 800 year old Degree Ceremony has hardly changed over the centuries, retaining all the main features of its ancient predecessors, including that it is conducted in Latin. In the ceremony, Dr Stephen Blamey, St Edmund Hall’s Dean of Degrees, presented the students to the Vice-Chancellor and Proctors. Parents, family and friends watched from the galleries as the students were awarded their degrees. After the ceremony, the new graduates returned to College for an opportunity to take more photographs and for the reception with champagne and canapés.

Reflecting on the day, Catherine Canning (2013, Law with Law Studies in Europe) commented that "despite the weather, there was an intensely positive mood celebrating our success with family and friends. College has always been a community that I have been proud to be a part of and graduation was no different." Catherine, who is staying in Oxford for another year as the Vice-President for Access and Academic Affairs at OUSU, the Oxford University Student Union, also said that "although this is the end of my degree it is not goodbye. I know Teddy will always welcome me back and that the Aularian network will let us all keep in touch no matter how far afield we go."

All our graduates have now join our alumni community, a world-wide body of former students of the Hall. Many keep a life-long connection with College, regularly attending alumni dinners, reunions and gaudies – just a few examples of the many events run by the Alumni & Development team.

We wish all our new graduates the best of luck in the future,

Floreat Aula!
