Following auditions last term, this year’s College Instrumental Awards have been given to Rachel Carver (2015, History), Alexis Chevalier (2014, Mathematics and Philosophy), Johanna von Kietzell (2015, French and German), Jeanne Ryan (2013, DPhil in Education) and Paula Zamorano Osorio (2013, French and Russian). We now look forward to enjoying performances from them, and seeing some interesting collaborations, over the next few months.

Johanna and Paula are both violinists and have discussed playing a classical duet for a future lunchtime concert. Paula is also part of a four-piece punk band, Little Sparta OX1 (LSOX1), who would like to perform either an acoustic or electric concert at Teddy Hall.

“I am keen to keep playing and performing both as a solo pianist, and as an accompanist,” said Alexis. “I think lunchtime concerts are wonderful events and I hope to be able to take part in as many as possible, and get other people involved by offering to accompany them. I am also planning on getting together larger ensembles form across the Hall, to make music into a genuinely social activity, and to be able to work toward ambitious musical projects.”

Alexis may also collaborate with harpist Rachel Carver, who has also already performed in a lunchtime concert as well as kindly allowing us to use a recording she made, to accompany aerial drone footage of St Edmund Hall in a College video.

St Edmund Hall is fortunate in having a lot of talented musicians, even though Music is not offered here as a degree, and our Director of Music Christopher Bucknall (a professional conductor and harpsichordist) is enthusiastic about supporting and encouraging music-making of all kinds.
