John Cox

John Cox (1957) is a well known director for television, theatre and opera. He made his name as Director of Productions at Glyndebourne (where he worked for a decade), and he was Principal Stage Director at Covent Garden for six years. His freelance work as an opera director is world-renowned. He is an Honorary Fellow of St Edmund Hall.

John was very active in university drama whilst at Teddy Hall. After directing Ibsen's "Ghosts" for the John Oldham Society, with Patrick Garland as Osvald, he was invited to direct for the OU Opera Club for the following two years - first Verdi's "Ernani," then the British premieres of Stravinsky's "Oedipus Rex" and Ravel's "L'Enfant et les Sortileges."

On going down, in 1959 he began his professional career in opera as an assistant at the Glyndebourne Opera whence he won a scholarship to study opera direction in Germany. For the next ten years he directed plays, opera and television before being appointed Director of Productions at Glyndebourne, a position which he held for the next ten years. He directed works by, inter alia, Mozart, Rossini, Haydn, a celebrated "Rake's Progress" (Stravinsky) with designs by David Hockney and a signature group of operas by Richard Strauss, with whom he claims a great affinity.

From 1981 - 86 he was steering Scottish Opera through some very rough water, which included his British premiere of the completed "Lulu" by Alban Berg. Then from 1988-94 he was the principal stage director at the Royal Opera Covent Garden. As a freelance John  has been active world-wide, in houses as large as La Scala, Milan and the Metropolitan, New York, and as small as Drottningholm, Sweden and Monte Carlo; in places as unlikely as Teheran and Honolulu; in standard repertoire (La Traviata in Salzburg) and in rarities (Pizzetti's "Murder in the Cathedral" in Turin, Barber's "Vanessa" in Los Angeles).

He also enjoys a long-standing relationship with the opera in Sydney and Garsington. 2013 will see the world premiere at the Santa Fe Opera of his opera "Oscar", for which he has co-written the libretto with the composer Theo Morrison. He is having no difficulty in letting someone else direct it.
