English Language and Literature

I teach Prelims Paper 1A (‘Introduction to English Language’) and Prelims Paper 2 (‘Early Medieval Literature, c. 650-1350’). My primary field of research at present is Old Norse-Icelandic, but I am fascinated by literature throughout the medieval period as well, especially Old English and Arthurian Romance. I am also interested in animal studies, environmental approaches to literature, and wilderness writing.

In my DPhil Thesis, titled ‘Between Nature and Culture: Animals and Humans in Old Norse Literature', I explore how animals and humans are interconnected in the sagas, how the boundary between these two categories is constructed and deconstructed, and how these literary representations reflect medieval Norse-Icelandic ideas, values, and beliefs about animals and the environment.
