About the event

Aularians on Energy Security

Winter is coming. How can we keep the lights on when faced with a major breakdown in international relations and the ever-present threat of climate change?

On November 14th, award-winning journalist and former-CNN presenter Manisha Tank (1994, PPE) will chair a panel of Aularians uniquely equipped to tell us how our current energy issues arose and what might be done to alleviate them in both the short and the long-term.

Chris Elston’s (1976, Engineering Science) long career in the electricity industry and alternative energy enables him to give us a valuable perspective on how the current situation developed, encompassing the privatisation of utilities, changes in electricity generation (physical and regulatory) and the scale of the task ahead.

Polar climate researcher and policy specialist Dr Susana Hancock (2013, DPhil Anthropology), describes herself as ‘A champion for social and environmental change.’ She has recently returned from an expedition to document changing conditions in the Arctic.

Dr Ryan Law (1990, Geology), founder and Managing Director of Geothermal Engineering Ltd, has over twenty years of experience of geothermal energy development from shallow systems to deep fractured rocks. Before founding Geothermal Engineering in 2008, Ryan worked in the geothermal unit at Ove Arup and Partners Ltd.

Director of BloombergNEF, William Young (2001, Modern History), is Bloomberg’s strategic research business, programme lead for its work with the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) and climate lead on the East-West focused New Economy Forum. He was instrumental in launching NEF’s research capabilities and advises clients on opportunities in the transition to a low carbon economy.

Joining details will be sent to you on the morning of Monday 14 November.
