In December 2023, our College boatman Jim Ronaldson embarked on an epic quest to row across the Atlantic ocean with his rowing partner Ian Davies in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.

Leaving La Gomera on 13 December, the Jim and Ian joined around 35 other crews on their journey across 3000 miles of ocean.

As well as the personal quest, they aim to raise money for two important charities: PAPYRUS, which supports the prevention of young suicide and Myeloma UK, which  supports research, treatment and care to people living with Myeloma

Just before the Christmas closure and on the safety of dry land, Jim’s colleagues, the College staff, enjoyed a fantastic Christmas lunch, during which a raffle took place to raise funds for those charities that Jim and Ian were supporting. In total the raffle raised an incredible £630.00 and this will now go toward those two charities.

Jim and his rowing partner Ian have been at sea with all the other crews taking part since 13 December 2023.  As of 23 January 2024, they’ve covered 1,899 nautical miles and have 1,101 nautical miles to go, so they’re over half way!

It’s been a fantastic boost for them to hear about the money raised at the raffle and Alex our Deputy Estates Manager has been in touch with Jim recently of which Jim replied:

Hi. Hope you had a good Christmas. I see you put some money into the Charity Thanks very much. We are stuck with wrong winds at the moment but hopefully they will change soon. Thank everyone at SEH for all there help and Support

All being well, Jim and Ian expect to complete their challenge in mid-February, and we will keep you updated as term progresses.
