Maia

Fellow by Special Election in Comparative and International Education

Maia Chankseliani
Maia is an Associate Professor of Comparative and International Education at the Department of Education.

I joined the Hall in autumn 2015 as a Fellow in Comparative and International Education. I came to the Hall with experiences in academia, policy-making, the non-profit sector, and international development. Outside work, I enjoy swimming, yoga, and running. Cooking is another passion of mine and I feel very lucky to be a member of the college that offers the best food at Oxford!

I work in comparative and international education. My research is highly interdisciplinary. I employ ideas and methods from education studies, international development, sociology, political science, history, economics, geography, and demography to examine relationships between tertiary education and society. Two broad questions I attempt to understand in my work is how and in what ways society recreates itself through tertiary education and how and in what ways tertiary education can transform society. My work within this broad intellectual area entails a variety of analytical interests, such as inequalities and exclusion, migration and mobility, internationalisation and marketisation, democratisation and socialisation, attractiveness and incentives, institutional capacity and institutional development.

Luckily, comparative and international education is a field of studies where females are well-represented!

My favourite memories from the Hall are the memories linked with our friendly and supportive community of fellows, lecturers, students, and staff. I have some very good friends at the Hall and have enjoyed excellent chats, meals, walks, swims, and travels with them. The Hall community has been sustaining me at Oxford.

What do you think when you hear ‘Women of the Hall’?

The presence of women has been expanding at the Hall, including in the Governing Body. We are very proud of our outstanding female Principal whose excellent leadership has been inspiring to many of us.
