“The Mad Lover” traces the changing figure of the lover through dance, song, and frenzied expression from the Renaissance to the Early Baroque. Beginning with the 14th century troubadour, to Diego Ortiz’s first treatise, the programme journeys through song of the Tudor court before the international explosion of dance form and the early sonata.

Bringing together music from across Europe, the recital explores how composers transformed popular melodies and courtly forms into increasingly expressive and virtuosic works, reflecting shifting ideas of love, longing, melancholy, and desire, revealing a musical landscape at a threshold.

Jess Norton Raybould read Music at Durham University, completing her MA in 2023 alongside a Cathedral Scholarship. She was awarded the Ramsay-Burn Award and Baxter Prize, and was the first female Director of Music at Hatfield College.

As a portfolio musician in Oxford, Jess has a busy career as a freelance singer, conductor and producer. Jess studied recorder under Heidi Fardell, Kathryn Corrigan and Annabel Knight.
