Caroline Rees

President and Co-Founder of Shift

Caroline Rees is the President and Co-Founder of Shift, a non-profit organization working with companies, financial institutions and standard-setters to make respect for human rights integral to how business gets done.

Caroline leads Shift’s organizational strategy and thought leadership work, with a recent focus on reporting, metrics and indicators related to companies’ social performance. Caroline was a lead advisor to Professor John Ruggie during his work to develop the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. From 2009 to 2011 she was Director of the Governance and Accountability Program at Harvard Kennedy School’s Corporate Responsibility Initiative. Caroline spent 14 years as a British diplomat where her career covered Iran, Slovakia, the UN Security Council, European Union and UN Human Rights Council. She is a Commissioner on the Business Commission to Tackle Inequality and a member of advisory bodies to Harvard Business School’s Impact Weighted Accounts initiative, the Investor Alliance for Human Rights, the Workforce Disclosure Initiative and the Capitals Coalition. She is a graduate of Oxford University and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
