DPhil in Paediatrics

Ambra is pictured in her favourite place, the sunny front quad.

I am a first year DPhil student in the Department of Paediatrics. I settled in Oxford in 2019 when I was working in the University as a research assistant. Soon after, I understood that I really wanted to pursue PhD studies and after several attempts, I got in! This for me represents the highest achievement in my life so far, something I could not even imagine when I started. But if you really want it, you will get it!

My research focuses on uncovering neuromuscular diseases mechanisms and finding new treatments for neuromuscular conditions. Many of these diseases are rare, and have no cure. Knowing that outside there are patients waiting for us scientists to discover new therapies is the reason why I keep working hard and do not give up! In the lab where I work, there are great professional women that are such good examples of successful women in STEM and I take inspiration from them!

After completing my PhD, I want to pursue a career in translational medicine and clinical research, possibly working in clinical trials management. There are so many possible paths to take and so many interesting people around to get advice from.

I am one of the Women’s Reps of the MCR at Teddy Hall and I am really enjoying working with the committee to make the college a better place with so many new initiatives. For example, we recently set up in the MCR a Women of the Hall society and a Women in STEM society. Plus, we have so much more in store…

My favourite memory of the Hall? Matriculation Day! With hundreds of students like me wearing their sub fusc in the college quad, everything felt so magical and I could not believe I was living it.

What do you think of when you hear ‘Women of the Hall’?

Women of the Hall is an amazing community of woman-identifying people, that are diverse in their interests and studies, but share a passion, ambition and determination for what they do. I am glad to be an active part of this community and I hope more and more people will be involved.
