DPhil in Women’s and Reproductive Health

I grew up and did my Biology undergraduate in South Africa before coming to the UK for my postgraduate studies. I am particularly interested in understanding the mechanisms underlying diseases associated with women. My DPhil research focuses on mitochondrial DNA disease which is caused by a mutation, which in most cases been passed down from mother to child. Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health is one of the leading academic departments in its field. It provides a supportive and stimulating research environment. I’m really enjoying the research as I’m constantly exposed to new ideas and this is helping me develop into an independent scientist. I’m now planning to do a post-doc after my DPhil and develop a career in academic research.

I am part of the Teddy Hall MCR committee. As MCR welfare officer, my role is to ensure that student welfare issues are taken care of, and working alongside other MCR officers to ensure Teddy Hall is a place that’s diverse and inclusive.  I enjoy speaking to and supporting our members and making them feel at home. I’ve also made some great friends in the Hall.

My favourite memory of the Hall so far is the Chinese New Year Formal where I really felt a sense of inclusiveness in the Hall. Teddy Hall really shows us that differences are valued and celebrated.

What do you think of when you hear ‘Women of the Hall’?

For me, a ‘Woman of the Hall’ is a supporter of women’s rights here, helping raise awareness against bias and call out any gendered actions.
