Speaker announced for Emden Lecture 2018

Every year, St Edmund Hall invites a speaker of note to deliver the Emden Lecture, the College’s annual history lecture aimed at a general audience. This year’s speaker is David Edgerton, Professor of Modern British History at King’s College London. David’s talk is to take place on Tuesday 16 October and will be entitled: The birth of the British Nation? ‘Alone’, ‘People’s War’ and the mythical myths of 1940.

A prominent historian, David has published several books on twentieth-century British history. Having graduated from St John’s College, Oxford, he pursued further study at Imperial College London before beginning a career in academia. Prior to his appointment at King’s, he taught at the University of Manchester and at Imperial.

David was a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellow from 2006-2009, and in 2009 he gave the Wilkins-Bernal-Medawar Prize Lecture at the Royal Society. He is the founding director of the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine, and is currently Hans Rausing Professor at King’s, teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate course options in British History. His most recent book, The Rise and Fall of the British Nation, explores the disruptions and transformations of British society over the past hundred years.

David’s talk will be held in the Doctorow Hall, St Edmund Hall, at 5:30pm on Tuesday 16 October 2018. The event is free and open to all, and no registration is necessary.
