This week saw the publication online of the first article of the year on the St Edmund Hall MCR (Middle Common Room – our postgraduate student body) website as part of their online research journal, Ex Aula. Postgraduate students at the College were invited last term to contribute articles explaining their research to a non-specialist audience, in an engaging way.

The first of this year’s posts has now been published and is a piece entitled ‘The Continuity of States’ by Ken Chen (Visiting postgraduate student, 2018-19). In it, Ken discusses the political and philosophical debates over the point when one state ends and another begins. He describes his research approach as being: “to look at each major component of the state such as people, space, power, and over time, culture, and explain how their continuation and evolution over time might bear on the identity of the whole unit whose components they are.”

Ex Aula is in its third year of existence, and promises once again to cover a wide range of interesting subject areas across many different disciplines. Further articles will be posted on Sundays, for the next few weeks. There will be a prize of £500 for the author of the best article, as determined by a judging panel made up of SCR members, to be awarded in Trinity term.
