St Edmund Hall is delighted to announce this year’s winners of the Simon, Arpi, Marie & John Simonian Prize for Excellence in Leadership: Cassandra Tatenda Mbanje (2024, MSc Global Health Science and Epidemiology) and James O’Neill (BA, PPE). The prize is awarded to Hall students who have demonstrated significant leadership qualities during their time at the Hall in any area, including contributions to the fields of sport, charity work, journalism, theatre/drama, music and academic leadership amongst others.

Cassandra is recognised for her leadership in organising the first MCR-SCR Academic Networking Event and James was nominated for his outstanding leadership as JCR Treasurer. On receiving the award, Cassandra writes:
I am excited, honoured and humbled to not only have received this award but to have been nominated in the first place. As such, I would like to thank my nominator Dr Luc Nguyen. When I started my tenure as the MCR Academic Representative I really wanted to spotlight MCR research and art while bringing together the SCR and MCR in a meaningful way. Consequently, I’d like to thank the MCR, SCR and the Academic Committee for their support in this effort. I am also deeply grateful to the MCR members who shared their research and art. I’ve truly been inspired by the work and passion of my peers. Being a part of Teddy Hall has truly been a privilege.
James was nominated for his outstanding leadership as JCR Treasurer. James comments:
I am delighted – if a little surprised – to receive this award. I am proud to have been recognised for leadership during my time at the Hall, and I would like to thank the students, alumni, and staff who nominated me. In particular I would like to thank the members of the Boat Club who have provided me with many happy memories during my time at the Hall, especially my Torpids and Eights crews. I would also like to extend my thanks to the Chair of the JCR and the members of the JCR Executive Committee, who worked with me during my time as Treasurer in order to contribute to the undergraduate experience at Teddy.
The award is given annually and is open to both undergraduates and postgraduates. It is one of nearly 150 scholarships, awards and prizes given each year by the Hall – find out more on our Scholarships and Prizes page.
