Alan Smale

Alan Smale (1979, Physics) writes novels and short stories in the science fiction, fantasy, and alternate history genres.

His novella of a Roman invasion of ancient America, “A Clash of Eagles”, won the Sidewise Award for Alternate History, and his series of novels set in the same universe, Clash of Eagles (2015), Eagle in Exile (2016), and Eagle and Empire (2017), is available from Penguin Random House/Del Rey in the US, and Titan Books in the UK. He has sold over forty pieces of shorter fiction to Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine, Realms of Fantasy, Abyss & Apex, and many other professional SF magazines and anthologies; recently most have been alternate history or historical fantasy. His non-fiction science pieces about terraforming and killer asteroids have appeared in Lightspeed Magazine, and other non-fiction articles about travel and food have been published in other online venues. His alternate history story collection from WordFire Press with Rick Wilber, The Wandering Warriors, will be released in August 2020.

Alan grew up in Yorkshire, England, and earned a B.A. in Physics in 1982 and a D.Phil in Astrophysics in 1986 while at St Edmund Hall. He currently performs astronomical research into black holes and neutron stars at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, with over a hundred published academic papers, and serves as Director of the HEASARC, NASA’s high energy astrophysics data archive. He also sings bass with six person vocal band The Chromatics, and is co-creator of their educational AstroCappella project, spreading astronomy through a cappella in schools across the US. The Chromatics have been Music Guests of Honor and regular performers at many science fiction and science teachers’ conventions across the country, which gives Alan yet another excuse to hang out with fellow science fiction writers, educators, and other cool people.
