Sir Jon Shortridge (1966, PPE) retired in 2008 following a successful and varied career in the public sector.

He worked initially in Whitehall and in local government before joining the Welsh Office in 1984. He was permanent secretary in Wales for over 9 years from 1999 to 2008, and had particular responsibility for establishing the National Assembly for Wales and for helping to make Welsh devolution a success.

He returned to the civil service briefly in 2009 as interim permanent secretary first of the Department of Universities, Innovation and Skills – and subsequently of the Department of Business Innovation and Skills. Since then he has held a number of non-executive roles which reflect his interest in corporate governance, higher education, and the voluntary sector. He was chair of Volunteering Matters, the UK’s largest volunteering charity, and of Glyndwr University. He has been a board member of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman and the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman. He is a member of the University’s audit and scrutiny committee, and the Royal Society’s audit committee.

He chairs the St Edmund Hall Remuneration Committee, and sits on the College’s Development Committee. He is a former President of the St Edmund Hall Association.
