The role of The British Society for Parasitology is to draw attention to the unique importance of parasitology as a distinct discipline within biology. Their mission is to advance the study of parasitology, aid communication within the community and promote dissemination of advances in the field

The Society announced this week that Professor Keith Gull has been elected as a Honorary Member. This award is made to recognise an individual’s sustained and outstanding contribution to the discipline of parasitology. These contributions may demonstrate their impact through: research, teaching, the promotion and dissemination of parasitology as well as service to the Society.

A central theme of Keith’s research has been the biochemistry and cell biology of microtubules. This interest was initiated by his early finding that a number of antibiotics and drugs acted by inhibiting these essential cellular components. His interests are now focused on the African trypanosome – the parasite causing Sleeping Sickness, a devastating disease of sub-Saharan Africa. His laboratory is particularly interested in the structural and molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis.

Further details of Keith’s research can be found at his faculty page.
