Sophie Mason is new MCR President 26-27

1 Jun 2026

Sophie Mason

Congratulations to Sophie Mason (2024, DPhil Biology) who was elected as the new Middle Common Room (MCR) President (2026–27). We recently asked Sophie about her time at Teddy Hall so far and her future plans in this role.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your area of study?

I’m in the second year of my DPhil Biology studies. I am in Prof Francesco Licausi’s group. My research focuses on the purpose of low oxygen in plant meristems and reproductive structures and the evolution of oxygen sensing in plants.

Why did you decide to run for MCR President?

I really value the community of the MCR and I wanted to step up to lead the committee to ensure we continue to provide the same supportive, friendly and fun environment for the next year.

What are your goals in the post?

My main plan is to continue to provide a wide range of activities and events for the MCR. I also want to make the most of the new common room spaces in the Norham St Edmund (NSE) site and use this to increase collaboration and interaction between the MCR and JCR.

How have you been involved in Hall life in the past?

I have served as MCR vice-president for the current academic year and was the MCR sustainability and environment rep in my first year at Teddy Hall.

Alongside Sophie , the following MCR Committee members have also been elected – many congratulations to all!

  • Vice President: Sam Thompson
  • Treasurer: Tom Dannaher
  • Stewards (social secretaries): Isabel Quinn and Ali Mort
  • Welfare Officers: Samantha Foster and Tosin Alatise

The current MCR committee will handover to the new committee in 10th week of Trinity term.
