Led by Dr Alex Lloyd, this year the White Rose Project is organising a series of academic and public-engagement events.

A call for papers is currently open for a symposium on the White Rose at the Hall in March 2020. In addition, a proposal for a concert of music and readings, ‘Voices from the Past: Remembering the White Rose’, has been selected to be sponsored by the Humanities Cultural Programme Project Fund. The Humanities Cultural Programme will include cultural events and public engagement activities over the years prior to the opening of the new Humanities building, and be part of the public cultural and community programme in the Schwarzman Centre.

As Director of the White Rose Project, Alex will work with Sansara, an award-winning vocal ensemble, to devise a performance of choral music alongside new translations of excerpts from the White Rose members’ letters and diaries. The majority of these texts have never appeared in English and speak movingly of the group’s motivation and courage. Performing the texts in juxtaposition with carefully chosen choral pieces will open up new ways of thinking about the material, and provoke more general questions about what it means to speak truth to power.

The performance will take place in February 2020. Details will be announced in due course.
