Undergraduates elect Jake Tommasi as new JCR President

29 Jan 2025

Jake Tommasi

As Hilary term gets underway, we asked Jake Tommasi (2023, History), the recently elected Junior Common Room (JCR) President, a few questions about his time at Hall so far and his plans for the future in this role.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your area of study?

Hi, I’m Jake and I’m a second-year History student. While I enjoy and have studied different topics in history from the Romans to modern day Britain, what I love the most is looking at religious and social dynamics in the Middle East, and I hope to begin my thesis on this over the summer.

Why did you decide to run for JCR President?

I wanted to run because I thought it would be a really great way to give back to the Hall. This is a place which we have all so quickly come to love and appreciate, and so to help foster and reinforce the lovely community here is such a nice feeling!

What are your goals in the post?

To create a really welcoming and fun community where we really get the most out of student life. This includes organising lots of social events, getting people involved in playing and watching College sport, forming links with other organisations such as local charities, supporting students in need (through welfare schemes or arts/sports funding, for example), and of course working with the College to make small but vital improvements around the Hall.

How have you been involved in Hall life in the past?

In so many ways – I’ve played loads of sport for Teddy (rugby, hockey, football, karate, netball and basketball) and got involved with lots of social events in Hall and externally. I also spend a lot of time in the JCR when not stuck in the library!

What’s your favourite moment from life at the Hall so far?

Winning the rugby cuppers plate last year was really fun. I hope to do one better this year with a cup win!

Alongside Jake, the following JCR Committee members were also elected:

  • Secretary: Abi Fernandez-Arias
  • Entz Officers: Tiffany You and Harriet Humfress
  • Men*’s Welfare Officer: Ewan Messenger
  • Women*’s Welfare Officer: Jess Milligan
  • Environment & Ethics Officer: Abi Lovelock-Blair
  • Academic Affairs, Careers, and Suspended Students Officer: Leila Osborne-Millar
  • LGBTQ+ Officers: Indigo Haynes and George Bichard
  • Charities Officer: Nyle Parvez
  • Accommodation Officer: Aoife Reynolds
  • Sports Officers: Dhaksha Vivekanandan and Kate Parsons
  • International and Visiting Students Officer: Seng Junn Fong
  • Access Officers: Alex Berresford and Jade Vohra.

Many congratulations to Jake and the new Committee!
