Mary Catherine O'Connor
College Lecturer in English
Mary O’Connor is a College Lecturer in English at St Edmund Hall.
Mary studied English and History at University College Dublin before coming to Oxford for an MPhil in Medieval English at the Queen’s College. She is currently working on her DPhil in Old Norse and Old French romances.
Mary is also a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Paper 6 Option in Old Norse at the English Faculty.
Mary researches Old Norse translations of Old French romances. Her focus is on the political life and culture of the royal Norwegian court in the thirteenth century and the role of translations in supporting political centralisation and cultural change. Mary has also worked on the transmission of behavioural ideals and courtly aesthetics through translation in medieval Norway and Iceland.
Mary is currently teaching the FHS Paper II Literature in English c. 1350–1550. In this course, she looks at ideas of authorship, romance, travel and space, and late medieval devotional practice in the literature of England.
