The Sheldonian Theatre – one of Oxford’s most impressive architectural features – played host to many of Teddy Hall’s students as they celebrated their graduation last month. The event represents a full circle for many students, as matriculations are also held in this venue at the very beginning of their Oxford careers. Over 100 of the Hall’s students attended the ceremony, which was followed by a reception in the College.

The ceremony itself has changed little in its 800-year history. After a procession to the Sheldonian led by the College’s Dean of Degrees, graduating students (or ‘graduands’) are presented with their degrees by the Vice-Chancellor and the Proctors of the University – and the ceremony is still conducted, for the most part, in Latin. Friends and family have a prime viewing position from the gallery inside the theatre, and there is a live video streaming for those unable to attend.

The majority of Teddy Hall students graduating in July had recently completed their undergraduate degrees, some with an integrated Masters. At a total of 106, this cohort comprised the majority of graduands. Eight DPhil students and two MA historic students also received their degrees, with a range of matriculation years spanning from 2000 to 2015.

Graduates and their families were invited to celebrate at a champagne reception at St Edmund Hall following the ceremony. Given the beautiful weather, the reception took place outside, providing students with plenty of opportunities to take photos in the College grounds. Please visit the Teddy Hall Flickr album to view our professional photographer’s album of photos from the day.

All our graduates are now part of the St Edmund Hall alumni community, connecting thousands of Aularians across the world. Many keep a lifelong connection with College, regularly attending alumni dinners, reunions and gaudies – just a few examples of the many events run by the Development & Alumni Relations team.

We wish all our new graduates the best of luck in the future.

Floreat Aula!

Further graduation ceremonies will take place later in the year. For more information, please see our Graduation Ceremonies page.
