Emma French

Dr Emma French (1993, History and English) is a Sunday Times bestselling author of books including Inside Broadmoor, Inside Wakefield Prison and Inside Belmarsh, all published by Bonnier. She is half of Britain’s top true crime writing duo and Inside Wakefield was the bestselling true crime title across all categories in the year after its 2024 publication. Her new book on the women’s prison estate comes out in summer 2026.

She is also the author of Selling Shakespeare to Hollywood (University of Hertfordshire Press, 2006) and has edited several plays, including A Chaste Maid in Cheapside and Oscar Wilde: Collected Plays (Nick Hern Books).

Emma completed a PhD in Literary Theory at Southampton after graduating from the Hall.
